How to Measure Your Roof for a Metal Roofing Order
Ordering a metal roof starts with one important step—getting accurate measurements. Whether you’re a contractor or a DIY homeowner, knowing how to properly measure your roof ensures you get the right amount of material without costly waste or delays. At Jackson Metal Roofing Supply, we make the ordering process easy, and it all starts with a solid set of measurements. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.
Identify Your Roof Type
First, determine the style of your roof. Common roof types include gable roofs (two sloped sides meeting at a ridge), hip roofs (sloped on all four sides), shed roofs (a single sloped plane), and gambrel roofs (a barn-style roof with two different slopes). Each style has unique dimensions, so knowing your roof type helps guide the rest of the measurement process.
Measure the Roof’s Width and Length
Start by measuring the length and width of each roof section from the ground. If you’re able and it’s safe, measuring directly on the roof provides the most accurate results. For a gable roof, you’ll need the length of the eave (the horizontal edge) and the slope distance from the eave to the ridge. Multiply the length by the slope distance to get square footage for each side.
Calculate the Roof’s Pitch
The pitch of your roof tells you how steep it is, and it affects how much material you’ll need. To calculate pitch, measure 12 inches along the horizontal edge (run), then measure how much the roof rises vertically from that point. A roof that rises 6 inches over a 12-inch run has a 6/12 pitch. This detail helps determine true panel length and material quantity.
Account for Overhangs and Overlaps
Be sure to include eave and gable overhangs, which are typically 6 to 12 inches. Don’t forget to factor in ridge caps, valleys, and flashing, as well as any overlaps between panels depending on the style you choose. A good rule of thumb is to add 10% extra to your total square footage to account for waste, trimming, and fitting.
Bring Your Measurements to the Experts
Once you’ve got your measurements, bring them to Jackson Metal Roofing Supply. Our knowledgeable team will help you choose the right panel type, calculate how many panels and trim pieces you need, and offer recommendations on fasteners, closures, and other accessories. Ordering too little material can delay your project, and ordering too much means you’re spending more than necessary. With accurate measurements and guidance from our team, you can move forward with confidence.
